Our story

Three generations on the same stretch of waterfront.

A working harbor with a long memory — and a harbormaster who grew up catching lines on these floats.

Est. 1962 · Boothbay Harbor, Maine

Since 1962

A handful of moorings and one fuel pump.

Sou'wester Marina opened in 1962, when Russ Calderwood's grandfather ran a handful of moorings and a single fuel pump off the end of a wooden pier on Atlantic Avenue. He'd catch your lines, sell you a few gallons, and tell you where the fish were biting.

Sixty years on, the piers are floating, the fuel float pumps gas and clear diesel, and a 35-ton travel-lift hauls boats that the old pier could never have dreamed of. But the idea hasn't changed: take good care of the boats and the people who own them, and they'll keep coming back. A lot of them have — some families have kept a mooring here for three generations, same as us.

The harbormaster

Capt. Russ Calderwood

Capt. Russ runs the harbor and the yard, and you'll find him on the dock most mornings before the launch's first run — coffee in one hand, a Channel 9 radio in the other. He grew up catching lines on these floats, ran lobster boats out of this harbor for years, and knows every ledge, mooring, and tide line in Boothbay.

Ask him about the approach in a southerly blow or where to find the best chowder in town and you'll get a straight answer either way. He means to keep Sou'wester a real working harbor — dependable, welcoming, and run the way a harbor should be.
