Why pet parents pick us

Low-stress, never assembly-line

We keep our day calm and our groomers unrushed, because a relaxed pet is a safe, happy, better-groomed pet.

Low-stress, fear-free handling

Quiet space, gentle restraint, lots of breaks and treats. We read your pet's signals and slow down when they need it.

No cage dryers, ever

We hand-fluff and air-dry with people right there. Your pet is never left in a hot kennel dryer.

One groomer, start to finish

Your pet gets the same hands the whole visit β€” no shuffling between strangers β€” so they build a real relationship.

Small-batch scheduling

We book fewer pets per day on purpose so nobody waits around stressed. You get a real appointment, not a drop-and-wait.

Our story

A little salon on Cottage Street, run by people who love your pets

Bark Harbor Pet Grooming started with a simple idea: grooming on Mount Desert Island shouldn't feel rushed or scary.

Owner and lead groomer Maddie Pelletier grew up in Bar Harbor, trained under a fear-free certified groomer, and opened the shop on Cottage Street to do things the calm way β€” fewer pets per day, more patience, and treats for everyone. Alongside her, groomer TomΓ‘s Rivera handles the doodles and double-coats and has a magic touch with nervous rescues, while bath tech Hannah keeps the suds flowing and the tails wagging.

Murphy used to shake the whole car ride to the groomer. At Bark Harbor he trots right in. He comes home soft, smelling amazing, and actually happy. We're customers for life.

Our husky blows his coat twice a year and our house showed it. Their de-shedding treatment is witchcraft. The whole place is so calm and clean.

Finding someone who'll patiently groom a cranky old cat is impossible β€” until now. They were gentle with Pickle and the lion cut is perfect. Worth every penny.

Good questions

Before your first visit

How long does grooming take?

Most full grooms run two to four hours depending on size, coat, and how relaxed your pet is. We groom at their pace rather than rushing, and we'll text you the moment they're ready for pickup.

Do you groom cats?

We do β€” and we genuinely enjoy it. We offer baths, de-shedding, sanitary tidies, nail care, and lion cuts for both short- and long-haired cats, handled by groomers who are patient with feline opinions.

What if my pet is matted?

Matting is common and we never shame you for it. Light matting we'll gently work through; heavy matting is safer and kinder to shave, and we'll always talk it over with you first. There may be a small de-matting add-on for severe cases.

Are vaccinations required?

Yes. For everyone's safety we ask that dogs be current on rabies and cats current on rabies, and we recommend distemper and Bordetella for dogs. Just bring records or have your vet on file for your first visit.
