What we install

One crew for the floor under your feet and the deck out back.

From new hardwood and waterproof LVP to tile, custom decks, and the unglamorous subfloor work that makes it all last — it's the same small crew start to finish, no rotating subs.

No. 01

Hardwood Flooring

New solid and engineered hardwood installed plank-tight, plus refinishing that brings tired floors back to life. We match the grain and stain to the house, not a sample chip.

Luxury Vinyl Plank

Waterproof, dog-proof, and warm underfoot — the right call for kitchens, basements, and busy households. Looks like wood, shrugs off Maine mud season.

Subfloor preparation and leveling before finish flooring
No. 06

Subfloor & Repair

Squeaks, soft spots, water damage, and out-of-level rooms fixed properly before the finish goes down — because the part you can't see is what fails first.

Material detail

The boring fundamentals — proper subfloor prep, the right underlayment, acclimated material — are exactly what keep a floor flat and a deck solid for decades.

Our story

Three generations of sawdust and salt air.

Penobscot Flooring & Decks goes back to 2004, when Nate Saulnier left a Rockland boatyard — where he'd learned that a tight joint and a fair fastener schedule are everything — and started laying floors. The boatbuilder's eye for grain and water never left him. Today he runs a small, steady crew out of Rockland that still does its own installs, still acclimates its own wood, and still gets called back by the same families a decade later for the next room. There's no showroom upsell here, just careful work and straight answers.

What homeowners say

The work speaks. So do the neighbors.

★★★★★
They refinished our 1900 farmhouse pine and I actually teared up. Nate matched the stain to the one room we'd already done so you can't tell where old meets new. Spotless cleanup too.
Ellen T. · Camden
★★★★★
Got three deck quotes. Theirs wasn't the cheapest but Nate was the only one who talked about snow load and proper flashing. Two winters in and it's rock solid. Worth it.
Mark D. · Rockport
★★★★★
Put LVP through the whole downstairs with two kids and a lab. It's been everything they promised — waterproof, warm, looks like real wood. Install was fast and tidy.
The Boucher Family · Thomaston
★★★★★
They fixed a soft spot another contractor just covered over, then tiled our bath beautifully. Honest people who clearly take pride in it. I've recommended them three times already.

No guessing, no pressure

Your estimate starts with a tape measure in your living room.

Flooring and decks priced over the phone are guesses. We do it the right way — an in-home visit where we measure every transition, check the subfloor and moisture, and bring samples to see in your actual light. You get a real number, not a range that balloons mid-project.

Precise field measure

We measure each room and transition by hand and account for waste, so the order is right and you're not paying for a padded square-footage guess.

Subfloor & moisture check

We assess what's under the surface — the single biggest reason floors fail — and tell you up front if prep is needed.

Samples in your light

Stain and plank look different in a Midcoast morning than under store fluorescents. We bring samples home to you so there are no surprises.

Clear, itemized estimate

Material and labor broken out plainly, with options at different price points and no fine-print add-ons. The number we quote is the number you pay.

Good questions

What homeowners ask us most.

Is the in-home estimate really free?

Yes — measuring your space, checking the subfloor, and bringing samples to your home costs you nothing and there's no obligation. We'd rather earn the job with a fair number.

Hardwood or LVP — which should I choose?

Depends on the room and the household. Hardwood for timeless character in living spaces; LVP for kitchens, basements, pets, and high-moisture areas. We'll walk you through the trade-offs honestly.

Can you refinish my existing floors?

Often, yes. If there's enough wood left to sand, refinishing is usually cheaper and keeps the original character. We'll tell you straight whether yours are candidates.
