What we do

Three areas of focus, handled with care.

We keep a deliberately narrow practice so that the matters we take on receive the attention they deserve.

PracticeFamily Law

Divorce, parental rights and responsibilities, child support, and prenuptial agreements — approached with discretion and a steady hand. We work to protect what matters to you and, wherever possible, to resolve matters thoughtfully rather than escalate them.

PracticeReal Estate

Residential and small-commercial closings, purchase-and-sale review, title questions, easements, and boundary disputes across Greater Portland. We read the fine print so that the property you are buying, selling, or holding is on solid legal footing.

PracticeEstate Planning & Probate

Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, advance directives, and the administration of estates through the Maine probate courts. We help you put a clear plan in place and guide families through settling an estate during a difficult time.

Why clients choose us

Measured counsel, plainly spoken.

We believe good legal work is careful, unhurried, and easy to understand. You should always know where your matter stands and what comes next.

01

We explain, then we advise

Law is full of language designed to confuse. We translate it. You will leave every conversation understanding your options and the reasoning behind our recommendation.

02

Discretion as a default

The matters we handle are personal. Your information, your circumstances, and your decisions are treated with the confidentiality they deserve.

03

Prepared, not theatrical

Careful preparation resolves more matters than courtroom drama. We do the quiet, thorough work that puts you in the strongest position available.

04

Realistic from the start

We will tell you what we believe is achievable and what is not. We do not promise outcomes — we promise diligence, candor, and our full attention.

What to expect

From first conversation to resolution.

Step OneConsultation

We begin with a confidential conversation about your situation and your goals. You tell us what brought you in; we listen, ask questions, and give you an honest read on where things stand.

Step TwoStrategy

We lay out your options in plain language, recommend a path, and agree on scope and next steps together. You will understand the work, the likely timeline, and how fees are handled before we proceed.

Step ThreeResolution

We carry the matter forward with steady preparation — negotiating, drafting, closing, or filing as your case requires — and keep you informed at each stage until it is brought to a close.

The firm

A Portland firm, rooted in Maine.

Longfellow Law Group was founded in 1998 by Margaret H. Longfellow on a simple belief: that families deserve counsel that is both rigorous and humane.

After earning her law degree at the University of Maine School of Law and practicing in larger firms, Margaret opened a smaller practice on Pearl Street with a clear aim — to handle a limited number of matters well rather than many matters quickly.

  • Margaret H. Longfellow, Managing PartnerAdmitted to the Maine State Bar; member of the Maine State Bar Association and its Family Law and Real Estate & Title sections.
  • Maine rootsRaised in Cumberland County and practicing in Portland for her entire career — she knows the local courts, registries, and communities the firm serves.

In our clients' words

What clients have told us.

Margaret explained every step of our estate plan in language we actually understood. We walked out feeling that our family was taken care of, which is exactly what we needed.
Karen P., Falmouth
During my divorce I never once felt rushed or talked down to. The firm was calm, prepared, and honest with me about what to expect at every turn.
Daniel R., South Portland
Our closing had a title issue that could have derailed everything. They caught it early, explained it plainly, and quietly got it sorted before it became a problem.
The H. Family, Cape Elizabeth
Settling my mother's estate was overwhelming until we had the right guidance. Steady, patient, and genuinely kind through a hard year.

Common questions

Questions clients often ask.

What happens at a first consultation?

We sit down — in person or by phone — and talk confidentially about your situation and what you hope to accomplish. You will leave with an honest sense of your options and what working together would involve. There is no obligation to proceed.

How are fees handled?

Fees depend on the nature and complexity of the matter. Some work is handled at a flat fee, such as a will or a routine closing; other matters are billed hourly. We discuss fees openly and put the arrangement in writing before any work begins.

Will I work directly with an attorney?

Yes. We keep a measured caseload precisely so that clients work directly with the attorney handling their matter, rather than being passed along.

Is everything I share confidential?

Conversations about your matter are treated with strict confidentiality. Please note that simply contacting the firm does not by itself create an attorney-client relationship; that begins once we have agreed to represent you in writing.

Begin the conversation

Request a confidential consultation.

Tell us a little about your matter and how to reach you. We will respond personally, usually within one business day.

Your inquiry is treated in confidence. Contacting Longfellow Law Group does not, by itself, create an attorney-client relationship.
