Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions clients ask most often. If yours is not here, we are glad to answer it directly.

What happens at a first consultation?

We sit down — in person at our Pearl Street office or by phone — and talk confidentially about your situation and what you hope to accomplish. You will leave with an honest sense of your options and what working together would involve. There is no obligation to proceed.

How are fees handled?

Fees depend on the nature and complexity of the matter. Some work is handled at a flat fee, such as a will or a routine closing; other matters are billed hourly. We discuss fees openly and put the arrangement in writing before any work begins, so there are no surprises.

Will I work directly with an attorney?

Yes. We keep a measured caseload precisely so that clients work directly with the attorney handling their matter, rather than being passed from one person to another.

Is everything I share confidential?

Conversations about your matter are treated with strict confidentiality. Please note that simply contacting the firm — by form, phone, or email — does not by itself create an attorney-client relationship. That relationship begins only once we have agreed to represent you in writing. Until then, please share only general information.

Which areas do you serve?

We serve clients throughout Greater Portland and Cumberland County, including Portland, South Portland, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Cumberland, Yarmouth, and Westbrook, with matters in the surrounding Maine courts and registries.

Do you take cases outside your three practice areas?

We focus on family, real estate, and estate matters so that we can handle them well. If your situation falls outside that work, we are glad to point you toward a trusted Maine attorney who handles it.
